Tether Car - A Look at the History
Model cars and airplanes quickly became popular hobbies in the U.S. after Charles Lindbergh was the first one to fly across the Atlantic in his airplane. Some of the model airplane engines were adapted to fit into model cars, and the Tether car sensation was partly started by the Dooling Brothers, after they decided to build a car by incorporating an airplane engine to make it go fast. Their test worked out and they quickly started to build these Tether cars and they would begin to sell them by the later part of the 1030s.
Some of the very first races that were unofficial took place in 1937 and the first official race that was held by the Dooling brothers took place two years later. In 1940, the brothers would build a car that would go as fast as 64mph. The Frog was a popular design and the Dooling 61 happened to be one of the most popular engines.
As the Tether car became more popular, there would be more and more races held for these cars. In fact, by the late 1940s, there were more than 2500 races taking place across the nation and there were more than 400 tracks across the United States. While they were popular for some time, during World War II, this hobby was almost ended with the demand for contributions of scrap metal for the war effort. Land development that occurred after the war would eliminate a lot of the different tracks for these races as well.
